What to Expect from a Korean Drama

17 Korean Drama Cliches that you'll probably recognize



1. Rival Lover watching from a Distance A Korean Drama isn't complete without a Love Triangle, so there is always the lover who sits and watches the love of his life fall for the lead actor.

2. Wrist Grabs - I dare you to name any Korean drama without wrist grabs. Here are types of wrist grabs you'll see in a Korean drama:
  • The "Just Stop"
  • The “Don’t Go”
  • The "Lady Wrist Grab"
  • The “I’m Saving You from here”
  • The “Wrist Grab Hug Combo”
  • The “Bro”
  • The “Double Wrist Grab” 
3. Mafia - Mafias or the men in formal attire and black suits. This men are those who deal with business covering the dirty deeds of the antagonist.

4. Close Encounters – People who you thought were destined to meet in that exact time and location but actually they didn't meet and were just used to put suspense in the scene.

5. Staring Contest – Characters stare at each other for a long time in a single scene until the music stops. Try imagining the situation without the music, Awkward...

6. Rain Scene – It is always dramatic when there is rain and an unused umbrella.

7. Soju - Soju is always used when there is a get together drinking session or a heartbroken lover trying to kill the pain inside.

8. The Piggy Back - This is when a character carries her when she is injured or drunk after drinking Soju... But sometimes they also do this just to be sweet.

9. Name Calling - Characters call each other’s name repeatedly in a single scene.

10. Accidental Kisses - I'm sure you've seen this kinds of scenes in almost all Korean Dramas. There are a lot of types too, examples are:
  • He carries her drunk friend and lays her on bed, and accidentally falls with her.
  • They accidentally bump into each other and one on top of the other.
  • The bus suddenly stops causing her head to move forward touching his lips.

11. Shocking Revelations – This is the part when a secret is revealed to the characters causing a big change to the story. A big highlight of the drama, cue: Dramatic Music

12. Flashbacks – Character recalls past events, sometimes even scenes that just happened moments ago.

13. Someone is always hiding secrets - She just wont tell her secret, and the reason is because she doesn't want to hurt his feelings.

14. Cliffhangers - This is why you just cant stop watching an episode after another. KDrama Marathon! 20 episodes, 1 hour each. XD

15. They have to be separated – Someone always has to leave… To another country. They just have to be separated soon. Sometimes, she just disappears from her love without notice.

16. To the Airport -  He finds out that she is leaving and she is already in the airport... He starts running to chase her in the airport, not realizing that it would be faster if he took a taxi instead.

17. The Back Hug The male protagonist stops her from leaving with that heartfelt back hug.
